Leadership Balance

You can criticize, condemn and complain or imagine, inspire and innovate. Your choice will determine your destiny. – Deepak Chopra

The need to go from NOW to HOW is critical. Leadership starts with our ability to imagine, inspire, innovate and communicate forward.

Hope lies in not simply playing to strengths, but to seizing every challenge, change, stressor and failure as an opportunity to grow, evolve and expand the power of our minds, the strength of our brains and the capacity of our hearts.

Courage lies in our ability develop a whole new mind set, skill set and heart set that optimizes the unbridled passion, purpose and potential of humans to do better, rather than simply living or working faster than ever before.

Strength lies in finding a common language, a common message that touches the heads, hearts and mind of many. A message that transcends social, ethnic, virtual and cross generational lines because it speaks to the purpose that unites us all.

Leadership starts with our ability to imagine, inspire, innovate and communicate forward.

Leaders must be purpose driven because purpose equals profit on a multiplicity of levels. If your employees, your team, your constituents do not feel that the work they do, the contribution they make, is purposeful they will never optimize or maximize their potential.

If they do not feel that they are an integral part of a bigger picture, a larger goal or a greater team, the engagement, loyalty, transparency of communication and collaboration optimization of engagement and potential will not be achieved.

Similarly, if they do not have access to resources that help them learn new ways of thinking doing and communicating that enable their greatest potential in the face of change, challenges, complexity and opportunities they cannot lead forward.

Leaders must embrace their ability to go from NOW to HOW by not simply playing to strengths but also to using change, challenges, stressors, even failures to optimize all 3Q’s: IQ (intelligence-focus-ability to learn and re-learn faster and better); EQ (emotional intelligence; self awareness, self management, relationship management, social management, communication); and SQ (values, purpose, integrity).

3Q Leadership strengths are not for the faint of heart. They are instead for those who want to negotiate dark corners, build new bridges among diverse groups and develop communities of purpose and practice that survive and thrive by using strengths, changes and challenges to communicate and lead forward.

Leaders must be excellent listeners, learners and communicators who build bridges across diverse groups, internal and external constituencies. They must build and empower Communities of Purpose where shared objectives, values, purpose and language empowers, engages and sustains actual, social/digital/virtual communication and collaboration.

They must have the courage to negotiate dark unknown corners with courage, hope, faith, integrity and humanity knowing that the differences that separate us are inconsequential in relation to the common human bond and purpose that unites us.

They must have the communication skills to find the message, the sound bite that opens the ears, heads, hearts and minds of all, irrespective of race, creed, gender or generational age. They must be leaders who learn, re-learn and fail forward faster and better than ever before by developing real and virtual/social communities of purpose.

Leaders must be excellent listeners, learners and communicators who build bridges across diverse groups, internal and external constituencies.

The need to go from NOW to HOW is critical. Leadership starts with our ability to imagine, inspire, innovate and communicate forward. It means embracing our ability to learn, re-learn, imagine, inspire and innovate by championing the mental, emotional agility and consistency of united purpose and integrity that can help us use what is to create what can be in ourselves, our people, our organizations…our world.

Am I at a loss?

Spirits of beasts want my soul..

I don’t want to change..

Art And Poetry By My Friend Karen Glosser @kglosserdesigns

We are always pleased when our online friends agree to an interview on our blog.  Our latest Expose features my colleague and friend, Karen Glosser, who creates mixed metal and stone jewelry with a modern edge in Chautauqua NY.

“We cannot hold a torch to light another’s path without brightening our own.” -Ben Sweetland (Photo by Karen Glosser)

KG Portrait (Artwork by Frank Cunha III)

Seeing your new photo art each day is inspiring.  Can you tell us about your latest artwork?

Thank you so much!  My photographs are something that I use as inspiration in my life and as a tool to help me design and create as a jewelry artist.   I carry my camera with me always, everywhere.  It’s amazing how my perception of everyday life has changed since I’ve started to look through the lens of a camera. There is so much beauty everywhere- all around us!

Can you explain your artistic process?  Which artists/photographers are you influenced by?

Because I always have my camera ready, I take a lot of pictures. I usually don’t go out looking for certain subjects or topics. When I see something that strikes me, I take a few shots. Then, periodically, or when I am designing a new collection, I go back through and I often notice themes running through my photos. I use this as a jumping off point for design inspiration.

Can you explain your artistic process?  Which artists/photographers are you influenced by?

I am greatly influenced by art.  Color is a huge inspiration for me, so I love to spend time in galleries and museums, online, or reading books. My favorite artists are Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still. Their use of color is masterful. I also find great design and life inspiration from Simon Alcantara, a genius jewelry designer. As far as photography?

I find great inspiration from the photos of the amazing Frank Cunha III !!!

Have you ever considered publishing an ebook of your work?

As a matter of fact, no.  I never have. Hmmmm….

I am glad we put that thought in your head!

Can You tell us about Your Process.

I came from a Beautiful World, which presented itself to me early in life. Art was always within me, in so many ways, in everything I saw and touched. I feel like a creator of Expressive Beautiful things, as if God Touched me.

Creativity! Yes! Art is a great Gift! I aim to transform my visions and feelings into my Art.

I create happiness. I can’t wait to go to my studio, express myself, and make things happen. Sometimes I pour the Colors on an Empty Canvas and before me I see all the things I had in my mind.

I like to create themes, with enchanted realities, dream-like, and with absurd beauty. But never losing the soul communication with the viewer when jostling together colorful compositions that are as jolly as kitsch Postcards from Heaven!

I like to immerse the viewer in the false immobility of life’s turbulence and to render the animated presence of Joy!

Everyone has a space within them that waits to be filled with new, yet unknown excitement.

Today’s Follow Friday Feature….

One of my favorite people to follow on social media is Barbara Fariña from Argentina.  She is a fantastic promoter and loyal fan.

Featured above are some of Barbara’s favorite artists.

1) When did you first get started on social media?

I don´t know really.  What I do know is that it all started with Facebook for sure.

Very much. When you understand Social Media, you realize there is another way to seeing and conceiving communication.
And different ways to do it!

3) What are your favorite top 3 sites?  Name a few others you like.

Every day there are new sites. Some of them you don´t even know for what were created.

Who is Vassilis & What is “The Remote Posing Project”

First of all I want to thank everyone for supporting and subscribing to my Art & Architecture (and misc.) blog.  In less than one year we have gone from 100 visitors a day to nearly 1,000 and growing everyday.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I have met some really interesting people utilizing various social media sites.  Vassilis, aka “Vasvas” has some of the most intense portraits I have ever seen.  The interesting part is that he does his portraits remotely.  Read on to learn about his process and how he creates these intriguing images of people all around the world, many which he has never met in person.

Vasvas, your work is incredible.  Can you tell us about your latest project and how did you get started with this project?

Thank you very much! My project is called “Remote Posing Project”. I post in instagram and Flickr hi contrast and highly detailed portraits. My portraits are extreme close ups of people’s faces in order to get the required detail. After posting some of my photos on instagram, a guy with nickname @Nixxin (Ben Boyd from Mississauga, Ontario) sent me a portrait of him to edit.

The post was very successful and I thought that as my shooting process is very simple (put your iPhone close to your nose and shoot!), I could sent some simple instructions and people from all over the world will send me their photos for editing. The Remote Posing Project (the name sucks!) was born! So far I’ve made the portraits of 19 people from USA to Australia!

Can you explain your artistic process?  Which artists if any are you influenced by?

The summary of my process is that I convert a color photo to a HDR black and white photograph. I use only my iPhone 4 for shooting and editing my portraits. The process was discovered by chance one day I was fooling around with some applications… The result was impressive and I perfected the process. My process enhances extremely the details of the skin making some people think  I shoot with an expensive DSL camera.. But it’s just an iPhone 4 or 4s and good lighting conditions! The comment I usually receive is that although I make people look ugly I capture their soul in my photos. Some others say that I make people look like coal miners, which I think, is true! Also women avoid sending me their faces!!! In my opinion I make some very interesting detailed portraits and that is all…. I don’t have have any influences, I never thought that I will be shooting portraits…. But I’m sure there are some great photographers who made this style of photography before me….

So far beside the people participating in the project, I had the pleasure to cooperate with some great instagrammers like Evren Dede (@evrendede) from Greece with who I made my most popular photo and Serhan Keser (@serhankeser) from Turkey who donated a great face to my collection!

Self Portrait by Vassilis This is my ugly face...! I use this photo for my avatar in Instagram. The original caption is "Vassilis Segos, Marriage Counselor". I try to use humorous or intriguing captions in my photos...."

Self Portrait by Vassilis This is another photo of me, previously unreleased. I posted this in a dating site with no success at all...!

@LuisDurazo (A Glimpse Into How Other Architects See the World Around Them)

Recently I met an aspiring Architect on Instagram who is able to evoke powerful Architectural images through his photographs.

When I asked Luis Alfonso Durazo Ballesteros (AKA @luisdurazo on Instagram) whether he would like to be featured on my blog he humbly accepted.

One of my personal favorites — Twin parking meters on 104th Street. Downtown Edmonton.

The main reason I like to share his work is because it offers my audience a greater understanding about who I am (as an Architect/Artist) and how I see the world.

Although Luis is able to capture his subjects in a different way, there are similarities that probably exist because of our similar educational backgrounds.

The following is a sampling of his work.  The captions were provided by Luis in his own words.

As you can see from this gallery Luis is able to elegantly capture how Architects see the world around them — symmetries, colors, shapes.  He is able to convey emotion of mind and spirit through his unique vision and creativity.

I am honored to be on of Luis’ colleagues and I look forward to seeing more of his work as he continues to explore, design, and construct the world around him and us.

If you like this post please share it.

Sincerely,
Frank Cunha III
